Review #325: Diverging Cadence (Cadence, #2) by Katie Hamstead

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“Regrets begin the moment we're comfortable with settling.”

----Andrena Sawyer

Katie Hamstead, an Australian author, has penned a heart wrenching tale of love and second chances in her book, Diverging Cadence which is the second book in the Cadence series. This book unfolds the story of a woman who lost her family in an earthquake, following which she gets an opportunity to go back in time in her high school days and make amends for her lost family, thereby falling in love with a guy who is not her late husband, thus forcing her to choose between second chance at love and her lost family.

Synopsis:

When Cadence Anderson woke to find her husband and infant daughter had been killed, she thought her life was over. Instead, she was offered a second chance and sent back in time to do it all again.

She’s made the most of this opportunity, repairing her relationship with the best friend she lost the first time, avoiding the romantic mistakes she made originally, and even bringing her family closer together. But she’s also done something she wasn’t planning on—she’s fallen in love with someone other than her future husband.

Stepping onto a plane and flying across country to attend university is the hardest decision she’s had to make. But unless she follows through with it, her future with Austin might never happen. And what becomes of her beautiful baby if she stays with James, the man she was never supposed to love?

The only thing she knows for certain is that she has to see Austin again, and she’s intent on reliving that part of her previous life exactly like she did the first time. Even if that means she has to lie to James to do it. Because, deep down, she can’t quite bring herself to let him go.

Now, past and future are about to collide, and Cadence has to make her final choice—follow the uncertain path of a life with James, or the one she came back to save . . . with Austin.

In this book, Cadence goes to college where she meets her future husband, Austin, who is dead in the present time. Leaving James back in her hometown, to go with the flow, as her already played out future life had been. Cadence has to forget James no matter what as she got only one opportunity to go back in the past and relive her days once again with her dead husband and child.

In the previous book, the author made the readers root for James and Cadence, and similarly, in this book too, the author forces her readers to make a hard choice to choose Austin over James and forget about their sweet relationship. The love will not only overwhelm the hearts of the readers but will also shatter their hearts into million pieces.

In short, I'd like to confess that the author did an apt and perfect justice to Cadence's story whose heart is torn between James and Austin. The emotional turmoil present in the story will keep the readers glued till the very last page. The writing style of the author is fantastic, layered with enough evocative emotions that has power to move the readers. The narrative style is articulate and free-flowing and unlike the previous book, the book has quite a fast pace.

The characters are another aspect which makes the book deeply moving as well as entertaining. From the main characters to the supporting to the characters who are present in the story even just for a moment, the demeanor of all of them are highly inspired with realism. Moreover, the main characters, Cadence, Austin and James, grow a lot in this story and with each their each step towards growth, they become more like-able. And in the previous book, the readers fell hard for James' character, likewise, this book will make the readers fall for Austin's character.

In a nutshell, this is by far one of the best contemporary romance book that I read in a while, where not only the setting is perfect but the emotions fall perfectly in the gaps of the story line.

Verdict: A must read contemporary romance series.
