Review #330: The Infinite Sea (The 5th Wave #2) by Rick Yancey

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“Human civilization was annihilated in three hours, before even one alien bothered to set foot on the ground.”

----Chris J. Randolph

Rick Yancey, an American author, has penned a terrific and thoroughly heart-wrenching tale of apocalypse, in his book, The Infinite Sea which is the second book in The 5th Waveseries, that unfolds the end of the world situation when the world is taken control by some alien beings by capturing the minds of the humans and in the wake of this humdrum, a high school teenager must make some decisions by trusting no body on this planet to save her little brother.

Synopsis:

How do you rid the Earth of seven billion humans? Rid the humans of their humanity.

Surviving the first four waves was nearly impossible. Now Cassie Sullivan finds herself in a new world, a world in which the fundamental trust that binds us together is gone. As the 5th Wave rolls across the landscape, Cassie, Ben, and Ringer are forced to confront the Others’ ultimate goal: the extermination of the human race.

Cassie and her friends haven’t seen the depths to which the Others will sink, nor have the Others seen the heights to which humanity will rise, in the ultimate battle between life and death, hope and despair, love and hate.

This book picks up right where the first book ended. Evan is still missing, but luckily, Cassie, Ben, Ringer and the rest have sustained themselves from that military camp base full of "The Others". Now that the fifth wave has hit the planet, there is only one motto, save and find the survivors and if possible stay away from "The Others". But not everything go as planned, when Ringer is captured and Evan gets his way back to Cassie and the rest of the survivors. But "The Others" are hell-bent to wipe out all the survivors by putting bombs inside the throats of young kids. Will it be the end of Cassie and the rest of the survivors?

I expected this book to be better than Book 1, but unfortunately, this book could not make me fall for it completely. Yeah, there's no denying that the story is something which is extremely mind-blowing, but the way it was present in front of the readers is not that remarkable.

The writing style of the author in eloquent and terrific and once again he makes the story a complete page-turner, but the narratives are not at all good, which left me on crossroads on whether to like Ringer or not. Firstly, the narrative is taken over by Ringer and we see less of Cassie in this book. Ringer is a badass, strong girl yet somehow, I could not fall for her demeanor, at times the POVs felt very mixed up.

The one thing that sets this book apart from the first one is the back stories of the characters. Moreover the depth is very deep thus letting me see through the whys and the why nots. All the doubts that were raised in my mind while reading Book 1, was put to rest while reading this book, since the author have explained each and every details with intricacy.

Once again the characters marvel in their own skins. Cassie is my all time favorite, who never gave up. Evan, oh my, he is better than his previous version. Ben and ringer are same as usual. There are some new characters which too are well-developed.

From the romance point, it was okay, not so great , like in the previous book. In short, the book is enjoyable, although not that fascinating.

Verdict: I only hope that Book 3 is better than this one!
